“Start Season” is the coming-of-age fable of a very unlikely friendship. I’ve had my Xbox HD-DVD player for 6 months and savor it – twisted on HD movies. I was frustrated at not being able to bag all the High Def movies available so I broke down and got the 100 dollar discounted PS3 as soon as the sign crash hit. For my first Blu-ray movie I selected Initiate Season, hoping I had made a salubrious choice and felt comforted by the quality reviews I read on here (Amazon) .

Sure enough the reviews were just the record is astounding in 1080P High Def. The movie was more piquant than I expected. With the quality of the portray and the decent animation chronicle you certainly won’t regret your recall. I wasn’t blown away by the uncompressed audio, but it also didn’t disappoint – fair didn’t really stand out where as the report certainly did.

I dunno if it’s because this is an arresting movie, but I can say that this is the best quality High Def state I’ve seen to date, better relate than the HD-DVD movies I’ve seen.

If you have fair survived another tough week at the office and are looking for a weekend hold me up, “The Proposal” is your distinct bet. Yes, I laughed outloud often, and so did most of the audience. The comment frequently heard as the credits rolled was: “Ooohhh, that was sooo goooood!”.

The story: a tough lady-boss (Bullock) is being deported to Canada for willful non-compliance with the US immigration department. To place herself, she directs her doormat of an assistant (Reynolds) to marry her. He reluctantly agrees to play along, after she “helps” him understand the virtues of being employed. If you assume you know where this sage is going… well, you are lawful. The “happily ever after” cannot be avoided. ‘Tis a comedy after all…What is novel is how skillfully the writers and the director allow the myth to veer away from the “happily ever after” course, keeping us on the edge of our seats until the satisfying slay, which we have known all along was rush to near.

The chemistry between the two leads is another fine surprise. I am not a particular fan of either Bullock or Reynolds. Though each smoking hot and talented, neither has made many inspired project choices. However, the roles here suit the pair’s natural acting styles reasonably well, which in turn further enhances the believability of their characters. The view of constipated doom on Reynold’s face, as he’s being informed he’s engaged, is side-splitting! I do regret Bullock does not play “mean” better; the intended juxtaposition of her supposedly tough as nails character against her overly compliant secretary is lost at times. We are TOLD she is a witchy boss, and yet she comes accross nothing more then efficient (Sandra: call me! I’ll give you some pointers. In return you can impart me how to fetch a secretary as hot as Reynolds ;0) ) .

Another gem in this comedy is Ms Betty White (of “The Golden Girls” fame), an octogenarian in loyal life as well as playing one in “The Proposal”. She has made an art of delivering “campy” with emotional intelligence. She does not dissapoint here either.

Final verdict? Will this film change the course of unusual cinematography?

I have to say that with movie prices nowadays, I went to peep this movie with high expectations. And in my plan it didnt disappoint. I paid to behold this movie 5 times. The chemistry between Ryan and Sandra is so thick that you can sever it with a knife. Even though movies in this genre have that one exclaim of everyone brilliant how it is going to raze… The proposal kept me on my toes. So now I have to hold it when it comes out on dvd.

The second season of this FOX action series continued to blend pop and politics together in an irresistible mix. Overall, this is another qualified season which would be a pleasant recall for the 1980’s and/or Depp aficionado on your list.

I never saw 21 Jump Street when it originally aired but having become a fan of Johnny Depps in modern years I was anxious to check it out. Season One started off tiresome to me, I concept the explain great improved when Jenko was replaced by Capt.Fuller. The represent was not though-provoking on Season One either. Even though I was slighty dissapointed with Season One I decided to give Season Two a try. It is Distinguished better! The cast has really started to gel, especially Depp and Deluise. There are some outstanding stories, in particular an episode called Orphius 3.3 which I assume really shows what talent a very young Johnny Depp has. The represent quality is also very mighty improved. As far as the complaints about the music being replaced, well, I never saw the fresh airings anyway so it hasn’t bothered me a bit. I recommend the Season Two DVD’s to any Jump Street fans or Johnny Depp fans.

Saw this production on HD-theatre and on PBS re-run; and the Zimmerman production is fabulous. I have seen a number of Lucia’s with large singers (includidng La Scala) but it was always hard to win to the kill. This production makes the sage more “watchable” and very delightful to the very kill (which I will not thunder in a review) . Have been waiting for this release since the initial showing, and can not wait to add this to my collection. The singing, of course, was MET opera wonderful.

2002 American Masters Documentary: Gene Kelly: Anatomy of a Dancer (Gene Kelly – Anatomy of a Dancer)

`S Wonderful: The Making of An American in Paris, an all unusual documentary, produced especially for this release. A dynamic history of the making of the film, which reveals how George and Ira Gershwin’s classic songs, the glowing art of the French impressionists and the ultimate teamwork of MGM’s legendary “Freed Unit” came together to earn a musical masterpiece. Featuring ten recent interviews, including co-stars Leslie Caron, Nina Foch, and Kelly’s widow. A very enlightening piece; Caron’s memories are probably the most involving, with Foch running a finish 2nd. Caron’s comments about co-star Georges Guétary being sparkling but not too quick-witted seem to be echoed by Kelly’s widow, who says Gene spent more time trying to advise him how to gracefully gallop down a dwelling of steps than on anything else in the film. It is discouraged that Maurice Chevalier could not have taken that role as originally intended. You also realize fair how revolutionary this movie was (artistically), especially because of the 17-minute ballet tacked on at the slay of the movie. Even Irving Berlin disapproved during an on-set visit, which didn’t serve the confidence of Vincente Minnelli at all.

Most are familiar with the movie; storywise, it is a microscopic creaky and hasn’t necessarily survived well over the years: Kelly is an American artist living in Paris. He falls in like with a young girl (Leslie Caron) who is in a loveless relationship with one of his best friends (Guétary) . Kelly is also in somewhat of a loveless relationship with his financial sponsor (Nina Foch) . You can probably guess the rest.

The glorious color, amazing music by Gershwin (arrangements by the talented Conrad Salinger), and the improbable choreography of Gene Kelly will sustain this one a classic for years to arrive despite a predictable station. Unbiased the ending ballet alone is a masterpiece; the art of Toulouse Lautrec and Utrillo comes to life with Gene Kelly & Leslie Caron dancing their hearts out to some of the most imaginative choreography (Kelly’s) in years. The Freed Unit at MGM was at their peak when this movie was made, and this is one of the last mammoth ones that it created.

It is a exact shame that with how incredible the relate is (the colors literally leap off the shroud, and it really adds to the appreciation of what an artistically exquisite visual feast this movie is) that the sound cannot match. Although it is sure and free of problems, the Gershwin music objective begs for a 5.1 or 7.1 surround track; unfortunately, due to the age and availability of the recent elements, this is not possible.

A resplendent movie that showcases Gene Kelly’s breathtaking talent. Forget the humorous epic and fair inspect him dance and dance and dance. He does more with a turn of a shoulder than most dancers can do with their whole body. This movie also introduced the lithe and stunning Leslie Caron as the object of Kelly’s affection. The film builds to its dramatic hallucinatory conclusion as Kelly dances his scheme across a Paris dreamscape, that brings all the elements of novel dance together in a tour-de-force that was unprecedented in musicals of that time. You can’t relieve getting swept away in the feel-good spirit of this movie. It was another time and area.

The Japanese seem to derive the western version of the Vampire epic quite attractive, and the expression of that fascination reaching a peak with the anime series Hellsing.

The fourth and concluding volume of the series offers four episodes. In the first, Sir Integra Hellsing–leader of the Hellsing Organization dedicated to defending “God, Queen, and Country” from the ravages of vampires–must battle for her life after slitting her throat to avoid becoming undead after a vampire attack. In the episode, worthy of the history between Alucard and Integra is revealed, though never exactly why the vampire serves a human against his hold kind.

Ensuing episodes culminate in a battle between Alucard and the outrageous Incognito. The ending doesn’t exactly pronounce a correct sense of completeness, suggesting a sequel in the works, as neither do we rep out who was responsible for the artificial freak vampires or what becomes of Integra.

Their ultimate weapon is a hunter that is a vampire himself, Alucard; an unstoppable figure that can face impartial about any sort of contaminated that the darkness has to offer him. Vampires and ghouls are not friendly with this elite team of hunters and soldiers lurking about.

“Hellsing: Eternal Damnation” is the final volume in this series. Sadly, the trudge ends, although it leaves room for another addition to reach in the arrive future. There are loose ends, of course; however, these loose ends foreshadow the possibility of a second series to near in the future. The last episode really shows us fair how effective and much Alucard truly is, while we gain to finally view Seras’ courage overcome her fears and weaknesses. And yes, we even fetch to watch how strong Sir Integra really is when she is fighting for her life in the tenth episode.

This last chapter of the “Hellsing” series is honest as gloomy and violent as the past volumes, if not more. Again, this is not a cartoon for children. These remaining four episodes fill graphic violence, blood and gore, strong language, adult situations, and sad and disturbing themes and imagery. Unlike the past three DVDs, this one contains four episodes instead of three; with the entire feature running at about 95 minutes long. Extras include a creditless ending, conception art, weapons gallery and more.

I found “Hellsing: Eternal Damnation” to be a grand conclusion to this mesmerizing and shadowy series, even if the ending is not exactly concrete. I really do hope that another addition to this series is in the making, as I could examine them doing big things with it. My overall thoughts on this series are extremely clear as I enjoyed every cramped of the run and regret nothing. The “Hellsing” series is powerful proof of what anime is reliable of producing. The hasten into Hell and darkness has approach to an end–for now…

Having viewed Pasion de Gavilanes in valid time, I found the DVD to be a amazing recap of the chronicle. Naturally, in the allowed time it would be impossible to leer all of my celebrated scenes, but in a “cliff impress” fashion I was able to eye the couples coming together and to follow the storyline. As a non-hispanic, the fact that the caps were available in English only made the experience more toothsome. Given the number of times I have rewatched PDG, and translating from the caps, I should know the dialog by heart. The tedious the scenes clips and interviews were a treat and I was very tickled with that. Finally, the quality of the DVD report was righteous. I found myself wishing Telemundo would release the novela to the public in its “total” package (30+ DVDs) and let us peril about how to pay for it. LOL

Pasion de gavilanes needs no introduction, since 2003 that the telenovela aired in Telemundo the public has been going crazy. One country after another falls captive to the charm of these three pasionate worship stories between the three gorgeous sisters Elizondo and the three good brothers Reyes.

This is a quality Image DVD. The image is challenging and crisp. There are a few trailers and a chapter index.

This movie is not science fiction. This movie was marketed bad and serene is. The Amazon reviewer writes, “it’s a uncommon mix…” There really is no mix. There’s no area area and very petite of the rocket. This is a murder-mystery wearisome and simple and I mediate a shapely great one. The acting is kindly and the tale ample.

Director Terence Fisher, in his pre-Frankenstein and Dracula
efforts for Hammer Films, does a suited job with what shrimp he has–
a crude budget and stock footage of German V-2 rocket launches,
plastic spacesuits, and sparsely designed control room sets. It all
works gorgeous well, though, because of the lovely cast.

I’ve always liked Paul Newman. He was blessed with matinee idol looks and twinkling blue eyes and could’ve fully relied on those attributes to carry his film career. Instead, he went his possess procedure and resplendent early on established himself as a maverick personality, with an independent mindset and a determination to beget it in La-La Land based on his acting, not his looks. Support in those days, when the Hollywood studios were peaceful more in control of things, that whisk of gumption could’ve spelled doom for an actor establishing himself. For me, there are two deliver gems in this collection: SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME and THE YOUNG PHILADELPHIANS. These are the first two Paul Newman films I saw, so they have special resonance for me. HARPER is almost as memorable, with its sequel THE DROWNING POOL and THE MACKINTOSH MAN being decent enough. Even POCKET MONEY and THE LEFT-HANDED GUN, two kinda bizarre films, have some justification for existing as motion pictures, because even at his least salubrious, Paul Newman unruffled exuded style and lumber, that unmistakable Hollywood presence that made him a top cinematic leading man in his heyday.

Here’s the chilly thing: all the films in this collection are being released in dvd format for the first time. Now, the special features are listed by Amazon so there’s no need to go into details. I will say that the extra feature I’m most looking forward to accessing is the audio commentary by Paul Newman, Robert Wise, and Martin Scorcese on SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME. I already believe the individual films on VHS but the decider for my having pre-ordered this collection is the above-mentioned audio commentary. Three Hollywood legends chit-chatting about one of my approved boxing movies? It was a no-brainer for me.

The seven films featured here vary from marvelous to decent to Geez-it’s-a-good-thing-I-like-you-Paul-Newman. SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME is truly obliging, with HARPER fair a notch below. THE YOUNG PHILADELPHIANS, which is in my top two favorites here (due to sentimental reasons) is a highly diverting soap opera-type of film. THE MACKINTOSH MAN is a exquisite bright peek thriller. THE DROWNING POOL is so-so; I enjoyed it mostly on the strength of it being a sequel to HARPER. THE LEFT-HANDED GUN and POCKET MONEY are my two least favorites here, even though both films have their bear merit. So, obviously, for Newman connoisseurs, his best films aren’t in this collection. Off the top of my head, I’m talking about classics like THE LONG HOT SUMMER, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, HUD, Frigid HAND LUKE, THE HUSTLER, BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID, THE STING, THE VERDICT, THE COLOR OF MONEY…heck, even SLAPSHOT is a glowing sports film. But, discover, all those are already out in dvd. This collection is for the Newman completist, as well as for those who haven’t yet had a chance to idea his lesser known work. I can’t, in top-notch conscience, rate this collection as 5 stars overall, because some of the movies themselves aren’t 5-star films. But it does pick up a very healthy 4 stars, as well as a semi-exasperated “Well, finally!” Man, I’ve been waiting for years for the dvd versions!

HARPER (1966) is based on Ross MacDonald’s classic detective Lew Archer and is an titillating mystery film. Newman is simply vast as the cold and unflappable Lew Harper as he attempts to ferret out a missing millionaire but ends up, as usual with these types of mysteries, digging up more than he bargained for.

THE DROWNING POOL (1975) is the sequel to HARPER and is decidedly a lesser disaster. This time out, Harper goes to Louisiana to glean to the bottom of a blackmailing place and ends up meeting eccentrics. A tiring, mystery, and, in a blueprint, more of a sever of life type of film. But, if you’ve seen and enjoyed HARPER, you almost have to behold this. Plus, it features a very young Melanie Griffith.

Paul Newman got to characterize middleweight boxer Rocky Graziano when James Dean (who had been originally signed) tragically died. SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME (1956) chronicles Rocky’s wild, law-breaking youth and his evolution from an unpolished street fighter to an unpolished prize fighter. Highly piquant stuff, with a very rootable protagonist. Pier Angeli, as his future wife Norma Graziano, is unassumingly charming. But, beget no mistake, Newman’s nuanced performance carries the day and is what made Hollywood sit up and really pay attention.

THE MACKINTOSH MAN (1973) is a pseudo-Hitchcockian chilly war thriller starring Newman as Joseph Rearden, a supposedly convicted criminal who escapes from prison in the company of a leer. Then, things derive more dusky and complicated. Not a awful gritty flick directed by John Huston.

THE LEFT-HANDED GUN (1958) is a sympathetic hold on William Bonney, aka Billy the Kid. As westerns go, it’s…not poor, though it is a bit loopy at times, with regards to Newman’s off-the-beaten-path rob on the celebrated outlaw. This time, the paralyzed Billy the Kid is portrayed as, more or less, on the side of the angels who seeks justice when his friend and mentor is murdered by a dastardly lawman and his peeps. This is actually one of my least common Paul Newman flicks.

POCKET MONEY (1972) is an offbeat fresh western-comedy starring Paul Newman and Lee Marvin as two cowboys who obtain bilked in a cattle smuggling draw by a two-faced rancher played by Strother Martin. This movie has its beget behind sense of breeze and takes a while to acquire into, as its not petrified to go off on its possess tangents. This is ultimately a character witness revolving around Newman’s gullible Jim Kane and Marvin’s dim-bulb Leonard. In fact, their performances are the saving grace of this film. For those who be pleased contemplative, off-kilter films without lots of action, this one’s for you.

Newman plays a young, gifted lawyer from the awful side of town attempting to scale Philadelphia’s elite social ladder. Jilted romances and courtroom dramas abound. Personally, I really dig this film.

Warners has been doing stand-up service; this is reasonably priced the extras are pretty, the transfers are reliable, and even the weakest movie in this position (MACKINTOSH MAN) is an efficient genre describe with some offbeat locations, so I’ll return to it even if it isn’t a masterpiece. While the residence may be short on Newman classics (a la THE HUSTLER, THE VERDICT, etc.), all the film are highly watchable; THE LEFT-HANDED GUN, an Arthur Penn film, is quite underrated, and POCKET MONEY is a droll change-of-pace. HARPER and DROWNING POOL are well-made old-school detective flicks; I actually like DROWNING POOL a bit better than HARPER, due to its Unique Orleans locations and Walter Hill’s script, but HARPER is a classic of sorts. If you deem you’ll like it, you will.

- did you realize that the priest at the beginning is actually the half-brother of Balian (Orlando Bloom)? Their relationship is mighty more complicated and dreadful in this version, and we learn that Balian is in jail following his wife’s death, thanks to his brother’s claim that he is possessed by the devil.

- We also learn that Balian was an engineer before he became a blacksmith, that he built war machines when he was portion of an army, and he’s released from prison because the local lord needs Balian’s attend. Sometimes longer is better particularly when you have a complex tale. The theatrical version of “Kingdom of Heaven” was flawed from the beginning with principal anecdote gaps that undermine the character development and the mild momentum of the legend. That’s because Fox had Scott nick the film by nearly an hour deleted essential and critical character development at the expense of trying to fit in more showings per theater. The result was a sprawling ambitious project that had the memoir scope of “Lawrence of Arabia” without the anecdote strength. Thank God for DVD. “Kingdom of Heaven: The Director’s Carve” restores the material demonstrating that the fresh 3 hour cleave was a shimmering film that played theatrical gradual last year after the film had bombed at the box office. The reason the film bombed was the idiotic decision to slice the film and form it shorter reducing the film’s impact. While it might not have made a great amount of money it would have done well at the box office as a prestige film AND would have deservedly been nominated for Oscars. Distinguished of the background tale is fleshed out and the relationships between the various characters are more clearly defined. “Kingdom of Heaven” is a sparkling sage film that recalls the power of David Lean’s epics and allows Scott’s historical drama to breath. The film is presented like the “Lord of the Rings” deluxe sets with the film spread over two discs. Featuring a graceful anamorphic transfer this version of the film actually looks expedient with less issues with digital artifacts when compared to the previous edition of the film. The 5.1 audio presentation sounds astonishing with both a 5.1 and 5.1DTS track that makes exceptional exhaust of the format. You’ll feel like you’ve place plopped down into the middle of the battle sequences in the action sequences and there’s fabulous ambient sound effects sprinkled throughout the film even during sequences that are dialogue driven.

Special features are terrific in this location. We launch off with an introduction by Scott discussing the “Director’s Chop” compared to the theatrical version of the film. Featuring Scott, writer William Monahan and actor Orlando Bloom the first commentary track (it was recorded separately and pieced together) becomes a rich resource of trivia beginning with the origin of the project and how Scott and Monahan ended up working together. The second commentary track has visual effects director Wes Sewell, assistant director Adam Somner and producer Lisa Elizey discussing the technical aspects of the shoot and the challenges they faced covering everything from the employ of digital and on station effects to second unit photography. The last commentary has editor Dody Dorn discussing the two different versions of the film. We also have production notes and information about the shooting of the film provided as text commentary.

The third and fourth discs have most of the supplements. Unfortunately neither has the top-notch A&E documentary that was fragment of the two disc space so you may want to enjoy on to your other region if you haven’t sold it already. We have “The Path to Redemption” presented in six separate parts with each running anywhere from a half hour to twenty minutes a part covering the making of the film. The first of the three parts include text, images, early screenplay drafts and notes on the shooting of the movie. The second fraction has cast rehearsals covering everything from the training with the weapons to costume tests. The third of the three parts has storyboards as well as a short documentary featuring scholars discussing the accuracy of the film.

The fourth disc features the last three parts on the film and includes video shot on space, storyboard galleries and photo galleries as well as deleted/extended/alternate scenes with optional commentary by Scott and editor Dorn. There’s also a fraction on the visual effects of the film as well as various sound elements to earn the unusual sound mix of the film presented in various stages. The last fragment features trailers, TV spots, the Showest presentation. There’s also footage from various premieres around the world, poster galleries, footage of the press junket shot on video, image and poster galleries as well as a brief featurette similar to the one done for “Gladiator: The Extended Version” that discussed the creation of this special edition.

An exceptional film that was badly butchered by Fox prior to its premiere due to troubled leadership at Fox, the film has finally been presented the diagram it should have been in the first spot. Fox DVD has done an exceptional job in putting together this package and has made amends for the plot it handled the film when it was released theatrical last year. Highly recommended.
